South Dakota Girls Hockey

Welcome to the South Dakota Girls Hockey web page. This website was set up as an informational site for parents and potential players who would like more information about playing girls hockey in South Dakota.

Girls hockey in SD started in 1998 with the first 4 team state tournament being held in Aberdeen in 1999. South Dakota girls varsity or Under 19 league has expanded to include every major city in South Dakota. During the 2005/2006 season there were 173 girls between the ages of 12 to 19 that were participating in girls hockey in South Dakota.

We are now actively recruiting more girls to establish an 14 & under league. The U19 league is well established and the increase in the number of girls playing hockey makes this a real possibility. Girls can start playing hockey in SD at age 5. Boys and girls play together until age 10. At this time they must make a choice to play either girls or boys hockey. The  14 & under league is being established to give girls between 11 and 14 a team of their own .

If your looking for a sport to keep your child involved in from a youngster through high school and beyond, Girls Hockey might be the one. Check out the testimonials from former South Dakota players and contact the girls representative located in your area.

To get your girl started in hockey, contact the person in your local area.

Testimonials from former players

Amber Davidson - Sophomore Concordia College-Biology Major
Playing girl's hockey gave me many life skills...it gave me the ability to show leadership and work with a team. I learned that hard work and never giving up was the only way to reach a goal successfully. It gave me a structure to follow and keep me out of trouble. Future plans for hockey are to Ref and hopefully one day coach.

Erin McMahon - Sophomore-South Dakota State
While I was growing up and playing on all boy teams, I dreamt of what it would be like to play on a girl's team, where I would be able to dress in the same locker room and actually feel like part of the team. My sophomore year of high school, I made the switch to the girl's high school team. The experiences and memories I have of playing girls high school hockey will always be with me, whether it be the wins, losses, or just the camaraderie among my teammates. Playing on the girl's team also gave me skills I would not have gained if I would have stayed with the boys. These skills have carried me onto the college level where I now play with former rivals. I hope that no matter where life takes me, I can still be involved in hockey, either playing or coaching.

Beth Rysavy - Concordia College
Girls high school hockey has had a huge impact in my life. I started playing hockey my freshman year of high school for the Sioux Falls Flyers. Not only did it give me a chance to bond with some great girls, but it gave me a love for the game. After my senior year of hockey I didn’t want to just stop playing. So I did something about it and I am currently trying out for the Concordia Girls Hockey Team (in Moorhead, MN). If you would have told me that I would be playing College hockey when I first started I probably would have laughed, but I can’t wait to start playing again!

Lora Healy - Mount Marty College
I started playing hockey as a mite on a boy’s team and continued playing with them until I was a peewee and then I had to stop playing because my parents did not like the idea of me getting hurt by “those big guys out there”. Eventually, Mitchell created a girls team and I signed up right away. From seventh grade until my senior year I played on the Mitchell Lady Marlins Hockey Team. Hockey is my favorite thing to do. It is a stress reliever and great exercise and something that I truly enjoy. I also liked meeting people from other teams and just the overall “friendliness” of the sport. In my opinion there really is not a better sport to play! I grew as a player obviously, but as a person as well. I learned how to take criticisms from my coaches and teammates as compliments. It takes a lot of hard work to play hockey but I definitely think its worth it. I encourage anyone who is interested in the sport to give it a chance. It really will revolutionize your life. As for what I am doing now concerning hockey, I play on the Yankton’s Men’s League. It is a group of men from Yankton and the surrounding area that gets together to play hockey for fun. Again, it is great exercise and nice way to meet new people! IF you are interested in hockey, please check it out. I would definitely say it is worth your time!
